SEO vs. PPC — Which One is Better?

April 29, 2018

We’re settling this once and for all….

Search Engine Optimization vs. Pay-Per-Click advertising. 10 years ago these terms were unheard of, and now they’re both marketing buzzwords. But how did they become such household names among digital marketers? And even for those confused about these buzzwords, what is Search Engine Optimization and Pay-Per-Click advertising? Let’s start by covering the basics of SEO and PPC.

What is Search Engine Optimization?

It’s basically FREE visibility. Simply put, SEO is the process of maximizing the number of visitors to a particular website by ensuring that the site appears high on the list of results when you search for something on a search engine like Google.

To make it to the first page of Google for some very competitive keywords is the holy grail for some businesses because it means that they’re getting more clicks to their website without having to spend any money on advertising.

What is Pay-Per-Click Advertising?

Pay-Per-Click Advertising (also known as PPC) is just that, a form of online advertising where a business posts an ad online, and pays for each click on their ad. Compared to SEO, Pay-Per-Click advertising is PAID visibility. One of the most common examples of PPC is on a search engine’s results page.

For example, if you type “maroon flash drive” into Google, here’s how PPC and SEO differ:

PPC is PAID visibility while SEO is FREE visibility.

Which One is Better?

Let’s get to the point. Whether SEO or PPC is better, might be a different answer for everyone. For some businesses, it might be one or the other…or even a combination of both!

Here’s the thing, everyone likes the word FREE. That’s why FREE visibility with SEO is very appealing to businesses. However, getting on the top of the search results page using SEO for good keywords takes significant time and energy.

This is AdvisifyMedia’s recommendation: If you’re on a time crunch and want to appear on search results or websites ASAP, then we recommend going the Pay-Per-Click route. (As long as you’re willing to invest in advertisements & have a solid plan behind how you’re going to run your campaigns.)

If you have more time on your hands and are patient enough to wait until your website makes it higher on search results (which may take several months), we recommend going the SEO route. The good thing about this option is that you don’t have to worry about spending money on ads, since you’ve earned your spot at the top.

We could ramble on about PPC and SEO forever, but we’re going to cut it short here. If you found any value in this article, we’d appreciate it you help spread the word by sharing this on your social media network of choice!
