Business Development 101: The Art of Engaging on Instagram
Whether you have 100 or 100,000 followers on Instagram, the same principle is true: your audience wants to feel heard and acknowledged. But what does this have to do with Business Development?
Let’s take a quick step back. Business Development, as defined by Google is: “the activity of pursuing strategic opportunities for a particular business or organization, for example by cultivating partnerships or other commercial relationships, or identifying new markets for its products or services.”
The bottom line here is GROWTH for the business. So how do you find growth opportunities and business development opportunities for a business? The answer is quite simple, actually: by reaching out to more people than ever before.
That’s where Instagram and social media comes in. There’s no better way to communicate and interact with large volumes of people who are actually interested in your product or niche, then on social media. Whether you’re looking for your next customer or next Instagram influencer partner.
Here’s a rundown of the best ways to engage with people on Instagram when looking for business development opportunities:
Comments on Your Posts
When you post a photo, it’s common knowledge that the more comments you get, the better your post will perform on the hashtags and on your follower’s news feeds. Plus, it’s easy to double-tap a photo and keep scrolling, but the fact that someone takes the time to drop a few words under your photo or video makes them stand out from the rest.
A general rule of thumb: Communication (including social media) is a two-way street. Your brand should enforce this by actively responding to comments (both positive & negative) on current and past posts, in a timely manner.
There’s nothing worse than a brand that doesn’t interact with commenters and uses social media as a content management system (CMS) rather than a communication tool.
Commenting on Other People’s posts
Apart from interacting with your own followers on your social media content, reaching out to other people and brands on social media is a key way to continue to develop business growth opportunities.
To set the record straight, it’s not really about HOW you go about browsing the hashtags and commenting on other people’s content, but rather the fact that you actually set time aside everyday to DO so.
Only after you get into a habit of commenting on people’s posts, can you actually focus on finding ways to get the most results (AKA relationships). This isn’t rocket science people.
Exhibit A — Bad vs. Better Comment on a Business Page
Bad Comment: Great Post! Check out my page!
Better Comment: I love the fact that you guys use quality ingredients to make your Pizzas. Keep it up, and I’d love to learn more about your business!
Direct Messaging Accounts
Sliding into those DMs aren’t just for booty calls anymore. Just like commenting, taking some time to send direct messages shows people that you’re genuinely interested in building a (business) relationship.
Instagram however does limit the number of DMs you can send to random strangers, when you do it often enough. That’s why, use them wisely, and make sure you’re connecting and 'DMing' people who you’d truly like to build a connection with. As for everybody else, stick to commenting on their stuff.
Now that we think about it, we wouldn’t mind if you slid into our DMs ;) So check us out on Instagram, and share blog this with a friend using one of the links below (if you found value in this post.)
